ESB International energised the first of three 66 kV Subsea Cable Connections between Bahrain Mainland & Hawar Island and energised the first 66kV Substation on Hawar Island, in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

ESB International will remain on track to energise the second and third 66 kV Submarine cable circuits by May 2023 before installing the final concrete mattress protection on specific areas along the submarine cable routes.

Electrifying Hawar Island

After 47 years of offering consultancy services in the Kingdom of Bahrain, on the 22nd of February 2023, ESB International delivered on two major project milestones with the energisation of the first of three 25km, 66 kV submarine cable feeder circuits between Bahrain mainland and Hawar island and the switching on of the new ESB International constructed Juzr Hawar 66/11 kV City Type Substation on Hawar Island, making it the first 66 kV Substation on the island.

Hawar Island is located approximately 10 nautical miles from mainland Bahrain and surrounded by pristine beaches and waters bursting with life and home to various endangered species. The island has been recognised as a UNESCO and Ramsar site due to its history and the importance of its marine and coastal environment.

Enabling Sustainable Development for our Client

As part of the Government of the Kingdom of Bahrain's National Economic Strategy for 2030, Hawar Island is being developed into a world-class tourism destination to increase tourism revenue. Supporting the development of the Island, ESB International, acting on behalf of our long-standing client, The Electricity and Water Authority of Bahrain (EWA), were tasked as the principal engineering consultant to deliver a sustainable and reliable electricity supply from the Bahrain mainland Electrical Network (Durrat Al Bahrain 66 kV Substation) to Hawar Island, a fundamental pre-requisite for the development of the island to meet its expected future electricity demands.

Strategic Solutions to Environmental Challenges

Working towards EWA's mission of providing a reliable and quality supply of electricity and water for sustainable development of the Kingdom of Bahrain while conserving the island's natural biodiversity and marine wildlife, ESB International delivered on these two hugely challenging project milestones, which were faced with many hurdles due to the international Covid-19 pandemic, logistical issues accessing the remote island, difficult seabed conditions and offshore working weather restrictions.

These challenging achievements prove our commitment to the region and will empower EWA for future generations. Dedicated to the paramount objective of delivering projects safely during the current unprecedented Covid-19 challenges, ESB International has ensured all works are carried out with meticulous planning to ensure the health and safety of our staff, clients, and partners.

Five Decades of Delivering World-Class Resilient Infrastructure in Bahrain

After many years of an engineering business in the Kingdom of Bahrain and with a current staff of almost 90 based in the Bahrain office, ESB International remains committed to being a successful, responsible, and progressive company, contributing to economic and social progress in the regions we operate.

ESB International thanks EWA for continuing to trust ESB International to deliver high-profile infrastructural projects for the Government of Bahrain.
