Power Station 5, Block 4

ALBA (Aluminium Bahrain) is one of the largest smelters in the world and has been in operation for over 50 years. ALBA is always seeking continuous improvement and boasts a record of over 31 million safe working hours without an LTI, achieved in 2023.

ALBA has five captive power plants located onsite to power the smelter operations, and 2022 was a record year for the smelter production output. To assist ALBA in meeting their efficiency and emissions targets, ESB International has been working with ALBA since 2015 developing Power Station 5, delivering a total of 2480MW of new capacity.

ESB International is currently engaged as the Engineering, Construction and Management (ECM) consultant for the implementation phase of Power Station 5, Block 4, a 680MW extension. This phase commenced in March 2022 and is scheduled to be completed by January 2025. This project followed an EPC specification and tender process overseen by ESB International. ESB International also provided the same services for Blocks 1-3 of Power Station 5, completed in 2015-2020.

The Gas Turbine (GT) for Block 4 has recently arrived at site. The Mitsubishi M701JAC is one of the world's largest GTs available today, and this is the first application of such in a smelter installation worldwide and the largest single-generation unit in Bahrain. As one of the most advanced and efficient GTs currently available, this will enable a significant reduction of CO2 emissions.

ESB International is proud to continually support clients in providing solutions to minimise the carbon footprint of power generation, utilising the most advanced technology available to achieve this aim.

At ESB International, we take pride in our role in ALBA's Power Station 5 project. Reducing carbon footprint is at the core of our strategy. The Mitsubishi M701JAC Gas Turbine's deployment in Block 4 is a revolutionary step towards achieving substantial CO2 emissions reduction, aligning with our commitment to enabling a low carbon future.
Seán Atkinson, Managing Director, ESB International.
